Shelter from the storm: “Our House, Too” in need of YOUR support

by Lindsey VanLusty (that's me) of the Gayly Oklahoman

HIV infection is still a reality; it is still a threat to our lives. Rates of infection are still on the rise in Oklahoma, and those who become infected are more likely to have incomes below the poverty line, may lack support from family and friends, may live in social isolation, and might also lack healthy role models. For these reasons, and more, Our House, Too exists to provide a safe place for people living with HIV/AIDS in the Tulsa area, to gather, socialize, celebrate holidays, and enjoy activities such as movies, card games, gaining friendship and support in a drug and alcohol free, homelike atmosphere.

A well-stocked library is accessible for those interested, and snacks are provided for participants.  Our House, Too is a 501c(3) non-profit organization and is staffed solely by volunteers, and relies exclusively on the kindness and generosity of private and corporate donors to maintain and carry on it’s services.

Our House, Too began its invaluable role in our community in 2004 to further the tradition of the first Our House. In September of 2005 there were 3 people utilizing Toiletry Pantry provided by Our House Too. There are now 60 people who access the Pantry. New referrals come in every week, the need for assistance and a safe, home-like place for those living with HIV/AIDS is extraordinarily important. At the moment Our House, Too cannot take on any more clients, consequently, there is now a waiting list. Because the people accessing these services live at or below the poverty line, and because food stamps do not cover toiletries and other basic living products, The Pantry includes such items and is open twice a week and people come to access it by appointment. Necessities such as the following are available in the pantry: Laundry and dish Detergent, Toilet paper, kitchen/trash bags, Disinfectant spray, Bleach, Hand-sanitizer, Anti-bacterial hand soap, Rubbing alcohol, Hydrogen Peroxide, hand and body lotion, toothpaste and toothbrushes, feminine products, mouthwash, shampoo and conditioner, ect.

Our House Too is supported solely by the community and is currently in DIRE need of financial support.

Can you imagine how helpful it would be to begin saving up those complimentary travel soaps from your business trips or vacations? Buying in bulk on sale items, and donating an item or two to the toiletry pantry? Cashing in your spare change and making a donation? Any little bit helps, but with such great need right now, all possible generosity is vital to the maintenance of this invaluable community resource. For those who would like to purchase or donate new & unused items for the pantry, items can dropped off at Our House, Too or Volunteers can pick them up. Since Our House, Too is a 501 c (3) organization, all gifts and donations are Tax Deductible. There is also a need for volunteers to cook for pantry days, holidays and birthdays. On June 30th at 6:30pm we are showing Transamerica.

For anyone who would like to contact Our House, Too to donate or volunteer, call 918-585-9552 or 918-282-8360. You may also e-mail harrismmjr@yahoo.com for further information.
